How to Extend the Life of Your Car’s Transmission

dreamstime_xs_13405413There is no doubt that transmission repair jobs can cost you a fortune. It is true that transmissions problems are unavoidable, but you can take the necessary steps to ensure your car’s transmission lasts longer than it would have before. Keeping this in mind, here are a few things you will need to keep in mind in order to extend the life of your car’s transmission. Drive Properly! Let’s be real, you are not participating in a drag race and neither are you competing in a NASCAR championship.  Apart from following the rules, you will need to take great care of your car at the same time. This means you will have to leave the lever at ‘P’ when you park and using the shift level rather than the breaks even if you are at a traffic light.  Moreover, be wary of your surroundings and avoid speeding to prevent instances where you will need to slam on the brakes. Consider Installing an External Cooler You can make sure your transmission does not overheat by installing an external cooler. Even though it is not required all the time, it is actually required due to strenuous conditions like extreme heat or when you are a part of stuck-and-go traffic on a daily basis. You have to keep in mind that unlike car oil, you do not consider the overall car mileage to determine whether you need to change the transmission fluid. Normally, you would need to change the transmission fluid at least twice a year. Have a Complete Checkup of the Transmission System at least Twice a Year A lot of people confuse engine problems to be the same as transmission problems. This can be avoided by ensuring the engine is tuned. When you know your engine is properly tuned you will be able to determine whether the problem you are facing is actually a transmission problem in the first place. It would also be a good idea to check the cooling and transmission system at least twice a year. Check for leakages and have the coolant changed when it is required. By having your car checked regularly, you will be able to catch issues in their initial stages, thus preventing them from becoming into an even bigger problem later on. There is no better way to extend your car’s transmission life than by driving properly and with regular checkups. Even though it may seem to be overwhelming at first, it is far better than paying thousands of dollars to repair and replace the transmission system.
