car repairSome drivers are natural car experts who can diagnose a problem without even popping the hood, while others know just enough to fill the gas tank and put the car into drive. But regardless of the in-depth car knowledge a driver possesses, understanding and appreciating a car’s diagnostics is very important.

Defining a Car Diagnostic

Cars are drastically different than they were at the turn of the 20th century. Today, every car contains a sophisticated computer system with intelligent software that monitors the sensors and electronic devices in the vehicle. When the computer perceives any irregular readings, it will record a specific error code that results in a check engine light or other warning light flashing on the dashboard.

gas pumpIt was only a few years ago that surging gas prices put a hot spotlight on the cars with awful gas mileage. Consumers eagerly traded monster SUVs for sedans with better fuel efficiency, and electric cars quickly became a popular trend.

But here at the start of 2016, gas prices have tumbled lower than anything in recent memory, and many car manufacturers are happily designing cars that, while elegant in style and impressive in technology, offer abhorrent gas mileage. If you’re in the market for a new car, keep in mind that these contenders will place a much larger strain on your gasoline budget.

To put things into perspective, the average car sold in the U.S can drive about 25 miles on one gallon gasoline. Small sedans usually boast better rates, like 35 mpg, while luxury sedans, vans, and SUVS may struggle to reach 20 mpg.

c7fbc2b2-5d01-4f58-9e11-aab64d06e27dThe automobile is a complex creature that requires many different parts working in synchrony to keep it moving along. Automatic cars take all guesswork out of the driving process and make it easy to forget the complicated system taking place, but it’s important to understand the inner workings of your car so you can ensure timely maintenance and proper attention to detail in the case of a repair.

What Are Differentials? A car’s differential actually allows the tires to rotate at different speeds. While this may sound bizarre, it’s actually a critical aspect of a car’s performance on sharp turns.

Why Are Differentials Important? Plop yourself back in 11th grade physics class and try to imagine a car making a turn. The car’s inside wheels will travel a shorter distance than the outer wheels, meaning they need to travel at a lower speed through that turn as well. Without the differential, the wheels would be locked together and unable to move at different speeds, leading to difficult turning that would require one tire to slip on the road.
